The voice

The voice was very clear. It told him to get up and leave his country and his people, and enter a realm, as yet unknown, that will see him transform into a great nation and experience abundant blessings. The kind of blessings that people will talk about for generations to come. The kind of blessings that will have an impact on nations, cultures and civilizations. The kind of blessings ordinary people only pray about, and just hope that it would sprinkle in their direction.

The blessing bit was easy to understand, and a lot easier to accept. No complicated theology was required to analyse its subtle layers. And one didn’t have to be an intellectual to figure out the implications of those blessings. After all, ‘to be a great nation’ is a worthy goal to have and to pursue especially for someone like him with a reputation for piety.

However, there was one little point that seemed somewhat odd. The voice didn’t tell him where he had to go. The voice just told him to get up and leave, that’s all. If the voice had given a detailed map and a fixed itinerary it would have helped matters a lot. At least, he’d have some actual physical location when people asked him where he was going. It would have certainly helped with the logistics when discussing the matter with his wife since she’d ask about provisions during the journey.

But he knew the voice had simply told him to go, and he trusted that voice. It was the voice of God. It was the voice of his friend. And he knew that voice would never ask him to wander aimlessly. There was purpose behind this call, and all he had to do was simply follow.

No wonder Abraham was called a man of faith.

Yes...we walk by faith not by sight. How many of us actually practice that? However, maybe the key is not the "practice" but the relationship - friend of God.
